Basement walls hold up your home structure and keep water and soil out of lower levels. Bowing and buckling basement walls cause structural issues that require immediate attention. Ignoring these issues can lead to major structural problems and costly repairs for your home. During heavy rainfall, water mixes with soil and pools up against your basement walls, creating hydrostatic pressure.

This pressure pushes in on your basement walls and, over time, can cause them to buckle or bow inward. As this pressure increases and the walls bow, this can cause foundation walls to collapse. Don’t wait to fix your bowed walls; call our team at Force Basements today to schedule an appointment for a consultation.

What Causes Bowed Basement Walls?

The most common cause of bowed walls is hydrostatic pressure. However, bowed walls can also be caused by structural issues that affect the foundation or framing of a building. Here are some other common causes of bowed walls:

  • Foundation settling: Over time, a building’s foundation may settle or shift due to changes in the soil or other factors. This can cause the walls to bow or bulge inward.
  • Poor construction practices: Walls may bow if they were not built properly or if they were built using substandard materials or techniques.
  • Water damage: Moisture can weaken the structure of a wall, causing it to bow or sag over time. This can be caused by flooding, leaking pipes, or poor drainage.
  • Tree roots: The roots of trees planted too close to a building can exert pressure on the foundation or walls, causing them to bow or crack.
  • Earthquakes: Seismic activity can cause a building’s foundation or walls to shift, leading to bowing or other types of damage.

Identifying Bowed Wall Problems

Bowed walls can mean trouble for your home in Central Illinois. Because of the potential danger bowed walls can pose, it’s important to know the signs of bowed walls. There are several common signs that a wall is bowing or otherwise compromised:

  • Visible bulging or bowing: Walls that are visibly bulging or bowing inward are a clear sign of structural damage.
  • Cracks in the wall or ceiling: Cracks in the wall or ceiling, especially those that appear in a stair-step pattern or are wider at one end than the other, can be a sign that the wall is shifting or settling.
  • Doors or windows that won’t close properly: If doors or windows suddenly become difficult to close, it may be due to the shifting or bowing of a wall.
  • Gaps between the wall and baseboards or crown molding: Gaps between the wall and the baseboards or crown molding may be a sign that the wall is bowing or settling.
  • Leaning or tilting floors: If floors are uneven or appear to be leaning, it may be due to structural damage or bowing walls.

If you notice any of these signs, it’s important to have your walls inspected by a professional at Force Basements to figure out the next steps. Call our team of experts today to schedule an appointment for a consultation.

Our Bowed Wall Repair Solutions

Our team at Force Basements has been providing bowed wall repair to homeowners in Central Illinois for years. Our team can repair your bowed or leaning foundation walls in a few different ways, depending on the severity of the issue.

Carbon Fiber Straps

With the proper techniques and tools, we can repair bowed walls quickly and prevent future damage from occurring. Our team uses a patented carbon fiber repair technique that uses both epoxy coatings and carbon fiber straps to support the wall long-term. The high-strength carbon fibers do not stretch, keep the wall straight, and prevent the wall from bowing more over time. Carbon fiber is one of the most cost-effective methods for repairing bowed walls if the bowing or leaning is caught early. In addition to this, carbon fiber straps can be used to stabilize and seal any wall cracks that are leaking water into your basement.

SafeBase Wall Anchors

For more substantially bowed walls, our experts will install wall anchors. SafeBase wall anchors are a 3-part system consisting of 2 plates and a long connecting rod. The process starts with driving a long steel rod into the ground through a hole we drill in your foundation wall. The first plate goes into the ground outside your home, 10-15 feet from your basement wall, to ensure we place it into undisturbed soil. The second plate is inside your basement, attached to the rod (which our team anchors on the outside plate), and slowly tightened to pull your bowing wall back into place. Tightening may require multiple visits to tighten the plate and ensure your wall is back in its original location.

SafeBase Waler Wall Supports

Our SafeBase Waler wall support system works with our SafeBase wall anchor system. This system is designed to add structural stability to a previously bowed wall and utilizes many of the same techniques as our wall anchor system. A rod is inserted through the affected wall and into a connecting plate 10-15 feet from your basement wall. When we install our SafeBase Waler wall support, our team will use Waler support system brackets to connect the rod instead of an anchor plate. This system is designed to spread the load of the wall and any areas where it has bowed across several connecting plates. They are the go to choice for stabilizing walls with serious structural problems as they will not only prevent bowing but will provide strength across the height of the wall and affected area.
